There are many Japanese language learning apps out there; I know, because I've tried most of them! But when I realized that even with my 1,000 day streak I couldn't pass the N5 JLPT exam, there was a problem; not with my effort, but with their design: you just can't "learn Japanese in 5 minutes per day". Those apps were all gimmicks optimized for selling your attention to advertisers, not for your language-learning outcome.
I tried immersion programs, but I struggled to pay attention. I didn't know what was being said or what the lesson was even supposed to be about! It's a strong tool, but it should not be the first step if you're starting from nothing. You end up listening without processing, and the session turns into noise, wasting your money and your time. I wanted a ramp, not a cliff.
That's why I created LearnJapanese.Today: most tools out there today focus on trying to get as many users as possible to maximize revenue from advertisers. Instead, we intentionally have a narrow focus: we only teach Japanese, so our tools are custom designed for this single language. We use an analytical approach instead of throwing you overboard to sink or swim with immersion. We use flashcards to teach you words, and conjugation drills to teach you how to use them. And we're constantly working on more tools to help things stick! Our goal is to help serious students learn Japanese as quickly as possible. You are our customer, not our product.
